Camino de Santiago Pilgrim Portraits: April 7, 2023

  • by

From Viladesuso, the Camino cuts inland a little and continues north, climbing the shoreline hills. At one point it turns east and crosses through a pass and into lovely rural communities on the other side. It works its way through the winding roads and back to the coastal town of Nigran where the four of us, Luis, Nearess, Carolen, and I waited for the El Pazo Pias Albergue to open. It was once the estate of a rich family, then a convent, and now an albergue for pilgrims and a hotel for tourists.

This was Good Friday, a holy day two days before Easter Sunday. Many stores were closed and restaurants had modified hours. Luis and I found a restaurant for lunch, but didn’t go out for supper. The albergue was unique in that we each had single rooms. I don’t think they had been redecorated since the days of the convent so the place had a sparse, yet peaceful feeling.

The Spanish seem to make good use of holidays to spend in the community. The park, playground, and cafes near the albergue were full of people enjoying the beautiful weather.

I walked 25.7 km this day but didn’t take any portraits.
