Jamie Dietrich (He, Him)

I explore new places, experience different cultures, and meet new people while walking. I take photographs, especially environmental portraits, of those I meet to create visual memories of my experiences.

I live on the shores of Georgian Bay in Ontario, Canada, and spend as many nights as possible sleeping outdoors

The Trail Portrait Project

The journeys I set out on – extended road-trips,  thruhikes, or small town explorations are of my own making, in places of my own choosing. When I cross paths with other people, on their own journeys, be them a waitress, a dog walker, a local resident, a pilgrim, or a thruhiker, we share a common experience.  It is in that connection with others that I find value and happiness. That becomes part of my memory.

Environmental portraiture and journaling are my main methods to capture and share these memories.

My Camera Gear

I have two requirements for camera gear: that it allow me manual control over all things exposure; and that it be small and light enough to carry while hiking. The Fujifilm X-E3 is my current camera of choice. It sacrifices sensor size to gain a lightweight body, excellent small lenses, and old school manual controls.

My preference is to shoot with a 23mm f2 lens, but I often use the 18-55 f2.8-4 lens for flexibility. I rarely use any lighting equipment.

My camera is attached to my  shoulder strap using a Peak Design camera clip, and  when it rains, I stash my camera in my pack.

My Hiking Gear

I started using ultralight backpacking gear in an effort to enjoy the journey more, not just the destination.  Weight, durability, and functionality influence my purchases. Without listing my kit, I will say that my backpacking baseweight, including camera gear, is approximately 13 pounds. My Camino baseweight, with camera gear is approximately 11 pounds.
