Camino de Santiago Pilgrim Portraits: April 8, 2023

  • by

From Nigras to Vigo, our destination for the day, we walked mostly paved roads. The Camino route zig-zagged up the coastal hill roads, and only descended when we approached Vigo. In Vigo, the Camino route followed a community footpath along a creek though an industrial section of town. It then led us north through the main streets of town to the waterfront. Luis and I stayed at the Albergue Público de Peregrinos de Vigo Juan Manuel López-Chaves, a recently renovated albergue on the edge of the old walled city. Nearess and Carolen were ready for a break from the city and treated themselves to a hotel room another 5 km further along.

I did explore the walled city and found a pedestrian-only area complete with street performers and high end shops. At the main wharf, a Spanish Galleon is docked. I found a food truck festival and ate some great food.

Gerald and Sheena

I met Gerald and Sheena, on April 4, at Casa Carolina in Anha, Portugal. They were two of four Irish Pilgrims we had much fun with. Sheena was treating some major blisters so they were going to shorten their days for the last 100 km of the Camino.

Back at the albergue, I met and photographed the following pilgrims:

Bente

Bente, from Denmark, is an experienced Camino pilgrim. This was her third Camino. She enjoys meeting and socializing with people, but prefers to walk alone.

Bill

Bill, from England, had just completed day one of his Camino on his bike. He had a conference to attend in Porto and thought he would squeeze in a 100 km ride to Santiago first.

Valdas

Valdas , a Lithuanian, looked up the Camino on YouTube and bought a ticket three days later for Porto. Upon completion of the Camino, he was off to Paris to explore and take in a concert.

Alesia

Alessia is from Italy. This was her second Camino. Her first was the Camino Frances. She started this time in Porto because she only had a short window of opportunity. She is a screen actress, a singer and a dancer. I did not ask her to pose. As soon as she heard what I was doing, she struck this pose.

Lorenzo

Lorenzo noticed my camera and approached me. He is a photographer from Rome, Italy. His Camino started in Porto on April 4, and he had walked 40 km this day. He realized that he was carrying too much weight. Lesson learned.

30.1 km of urban walking this day.
