Finlayson Point Provincial Park: July 27, 2025

Ben and Cheryl

Ben and Cheryl are old friends of ours from Kitchener. In retirement, they have become YouTubers – “Camping with the Coles”. They produce video reviews of conservation areas, provincial, state, and national parks. I used to work at this park, Finlayson Point Provincial Park, so I have been encouraging them to visit and review it for a while. They are depicted here in the cabin atop the fire tower, overlooking Lake Temagami. The town has refurbished the tower, complete with a stable set of steps offering those brave enough to climb a spectacular view.

Finlayson Point Provincial Park is another gem of a park for campground walking. It occupies a peninsula of land on the east arm of Lake Temagami. The campground roads follow the shoreline and criss-cross the hills. The park is small and lacks walking trails, but the lake is never far away and is full of fish. It also has a unique northern Ontario soundtrack – the coming and going of float planes taking canoe trippers and fisherman into the interior of the Temagami area.

Kayley

Kayley is the Discovery Staff at Finlayson Point Provincial Park, the same position I held in 1987 at this park. She leads hikes, children’s educational programmes, and answers camper wildlife questions. The old ampitheatre I hosted movie nights in so many years ago has been abandoned so evening programming is long gone. She just graduated from University of Guelph with a Wildlife Biology degree. She is on the hunt for a permanent position in her field.
