Camino del Norte Portraits: April 28, 2024

  • by

The rains have gone. Today we walked to  Sobrado Dos Monxes and stopped for a well deserved Coca Cola Zero at a bar in town. Our friend Insu, from Korea explained that the tapas (small snack) given to us by the bartender was made from pork knuckles, a delicacy in Korea. The Albergue de Peregrinos de Sobrado dos Monxes, where we we are staying, was in a 10th century monastery now operated by Trappist Monks. Two priests and 10 brothers operate the church, gift shop, and albergue. The dorms were renovated in 2020 with a 700000 Euros grant from the region of Galicia. They accommodations were very comfortable, but Brother Laurence who signed us in was particular about his procedures. The next pilgrims to arrive were puzzled when they tried the door to enter and Laurence locked them out. He has a quirky way of entertaining.

We found a restaurant just outside the monastery with a ‘Pilgrims Menu’ and ate very well. Back at the albergue we explored the buildings and visited with many pilgrim friends.

Monika is from Germany. She has been on the Camino since March 25 and walks alone, searching out beautiful places. She especially enjoyed the coast near Aviles.

Laurence is a Trappist brother at the Monasterio de Sobrado. There are 10 brothers and two priests who live in the cloister. The monastery is a tourist attraction and an albergue. The albergue has 99 bunks in newly renovated dorms.

Maciej is from Poland. He started April 4 in Irun. This is his first camino and he is moving quickly.
