Wakami Lake Provincial Park: August 9, 2025

  • by

Wakami Lake Provincial Park is one of my favourite places. I learned of it through the Wakami Walers, a musical group made up of Wakami Lake Park staff. In the 1980’s they brought the songs of early lumberjacks to life for park visitors. They made records and went on the road. When I finally visited this park with few facilities, no electricity, and a long way from anywhere, I was struck by its beauty. Most campsites are either on the water or just across the road from the water. The campers were a hardy crew who all seemed to know each other. Many had been visiting the park for over a decade and staying half the summer. The set routine was fish in the morning, return for an afternoon nap and happy hour, and finish the evening by fishing until sunset.

Jordan

Jordan is the Technical Operations Manager/Park Warden at Wakami Lake Provincial Park. His previous park, Grundy Lake Provincial Park near Parry Sound, had nearly 500 campsites, thousands of visitors, and a big staff. He always has someone to turn to for expertise. Now he has to figure it all out himself. This park has a large area, few sites a tiny staff, and a dedicated group of campers who return for long stays, year after year. Jordan has a “can do” attitude and fixes whatever needs fixing. He is on a first name basis with most visitors. His love for his job and this park is infectious.
