Daniel and I first met at this ski race hut at Craigleith Ski Hill where we escaped the rain for lunch. Daniel, from Quebec City, was a fellow thruhiker. He was leaving a bike at his daily finishing spot, driving his car to his daily starting point, hiking from one to the other, then biking back to his car. Even though he was NOBO (North Bound), he walked his daily sections from north to south, so we would meet, chat, and pass each day. Our pace was similar so when we reached Wiarton, we started to hike together. We finished in Tobermory together five days later.

Chris was on her second attempt to thruhike the Bruce Trail SOBO (South Bound). Last year she didn’t eat enough along the way in an attempt to reduce pack weight and ended up ‘malnourished’. She ended last year’s hike at Mono. This year she started May 9, was better prepared for the hike, and was doing well when I met her in the Len Gertler Memorial Loree Forest. She was nearing the halfway point with the most difficult sections behind her. On her second last day, in Short Hills Provincial Park, less than 40 km from the end, she broke her ankle and had to go home to Hamilton. In September, she walked from Hamilton to Queenston to complete her thruhike.
