Camino del Norte Portraits: April 4, 2024

  • by

The walk out of Bilbao was almost exclusively on pavement, but mostly on community walking and biking paths so traffic was not a problem. We were entering the region of Cantabria and leaving the Basque region. Coastal trails led us to the Albergue Tu Camino in Onton. This was another Donativo with dinner and breakfast. We ended up in a room for four. While we waited for dinner, Steven and I fixed the shoe rack.

Steven

Steven is from Belgium. He was in the bunk below me my first night in Irun but I didn’t have a chance to get to know him. Since then we have crossed paths many times. He has walked many Caminos including to Rome and Canterbury. He is out for two weeks and hopes to return in May or June to finish the Norte.

Daniel

Daniel works at the Albergue Tu Camino in Onton. He is very friendly and spoke with us at length about the religion of soccer in Bilbao. He lives along the French Camino but spends seven months in Onton, serving pilgrims.

Daniel

Daniel is from Ottawa, Canada. He just started walking in Bilbao, but is hoping to reach Santiago with his friend Elisabeth. He is new to walking long distances and was carrying an unnecessary tent, but was very enthusiastic.

Elisabeth

Elisabeth is from Cumbermere, Ontario, Canada. She does lots of walking at home and is eager to reach Santiago with her friend Daniel.

Edith and Tony

Edith and Tony, are a daughter and father duo from England. Edith has walked two other Caminos and invited her father to join her for this one. She is living in Spain teaching in a private British school in Mallorca.
