Mary was the first SOBO (South Bound) thruhiker I met. Mary, from Alberta, started on May 1 in Tobermory and found the trail challenging and lonely. She was looking forward to the southern section where she would have the support of a relative who lived in the Hamilton area. I met her in the Hockley Valley Provincial Nature Reserve. What stood out to her on her journey was all the old brick and stone homes, something rarely seen in Alberta.
I finished my day just east of Primrose on Highway 89. Ron met me and took me to his grandfather’s original farmstead near Dundalk to stay for the night. We camped in the yard behind the original house, now owned by his niece.
